Artist’s Bio:
Iain and Joanna Hyde of Denver, have been playing music together since their ages were in single digits. The Hydes, have blended Celtic, Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz and other styles into a unique blend of acoustic music and tight family harmony vocals.
They have appeared on many stages around the region, including as favorites at the Swallow Hill Music Association in Denver. For the past few years they have been the Celtic fiddlers for the Denver Brass' sold-out “Brass & Bagpipes” shows (4 performances) at the Newman Center in Denver to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. In 2005 they performed twice at Fado Irish Pub in Denver, once for the Fado Festival, and once for St. Patrick's Day. They have opened for performers such as Eileen Ivers and Dan Crary in Keystone. Iain has also opened for national Country acts Diamond Rio and Trent Willmon with The Mike Love Band.
Iain and Joanna have each won many fiddle competitions, including the Colorado State and Colorado Open Grand Championships. Joanna is the 2007 Colorado Rocky Mountain champion in the Young Adult category. They both finished in the top 5 in their age categories at the National Old-Time Fiddle Contest in Idaho. Iain has also won the RockyGrass fiddle competition. They have studied with many great fiddlers, such as James Kelly from Ireland and Jerry Holland and Natalie MacMaster from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. They have also studied with Swing fiddler Paul Anastasio, formerly of the group Asleep at the Wheel.
Iain graduated from Colorado College in May 2006 majoring in Political Science. He recently worked on the staff of a Colorado political campaign. In November 2006, he began work as a disaster response specialist for a consulting firm. His interest in disaster work began with his community service January 2006 in the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. Iain plays many musical styles on fiddle, guitar and mandolin, as well as playing classical violin.
Joanna has had a fiddle in her hand since she was 5 years old, playing classical music as well as a variety of fiddle styles (Bluegrass, Irish, Cape Breton, Swing, Folk, and Texas Swing). She has been a Championship Irish dancer as well as having studied the Cape Breton dance style. Joanna currently attends Colorado College as a Boettcher Scholar and is in her sophomore year.
What people have said about the Hydes:
“Joanna Hyde displayed her awesome talents and charm all night long. You can see why she is a state champion fiddler. And she has an angelic voice and can sing while she dances. Pretty impressive. And, her older brother (22, still young, too) can play beautifully on violin, mandolin and the guitar. Oh, yea, he can sing wonderfully, too. An embarrassment of musical talent in that Hyde family… They should clone this family.”
-Steve’s Guitars, Carbondale, CO
“The Hyde Family Fiddlers are exceptional young stars who bring the highest level of performance, charm and poise to everything they do. They provide the frosting on the cake for the annual Denver Brass show ‘Brass, Bagpipes & Co.’”
- Kathy Brantigan, Executive Director The Denver Brass
